Continue to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls renowned for its impressive drop of nearly 200 feet. Stop at the tiny village of Skógar, home to traditional turf-roofed houses and charming schoolhouse built in 1901. Then stroll along Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach framed by sea stacks and basalt columns rising like organ pipes from the earth. With pounding ocean surf on one side and steep cliffs above, it’s one of Iceland’s most hauntingly beautiful landscapes—a fitting finale to a day of discovery along the southern edge of the island. The Reykjavik Botanical Garden, National Museum of Iceland and Reykjavik Art Museum are also worth visiting.
