Today's adventure starts with an easy walk where you'll traverse lush, terraced rice paddies, meander amid fruit plantations, and immerse yourself in the serene sounds of the countryside. Take a moment to engage with the friendly locals and farmers that will be performing their daily activities, as they diligently cultivate the land. The last stretch includes a few steps leading onto a small hill, where the mystical Candi Selogriyo awaits, an ancient Hindu temple perched on the west hillside of Mount Sumbing. Dating back to the 9th century during the Mataram era, this architectural marvel faced a significant challenge in the 90s when a landslide struck. However, through dedicated restoration efforts, the temple was meticulously reconstructed, preserving its historical and cultural significance. Treat yourself to a delightful picnic with panoramic views of the mysterious Candi Selogriyo. As you savour the moment, surrounded by the lush greenery and ancient beauty, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the rich history and cultural tapestry woven into this hidden gem. Meals B+L
Today head to the stunning temple complex at Borobudur, one of South East Asia’s most impressive sites and the largest single Buddhist monument in the world. Receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991, the monument consists of six square terraces topped by three circular ones. Two million stone blocks were required to build the temple and with at least 2,500 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues, it is exquisite beyond comparison. Ample time will be dedicated to exploring this incredible Buddhist structure before heading to the city of Yogyakarta and continue a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, which is also known as the Kraton. The innermost group of buildings (where the sultan still resides) were built in 1755. As you pass through the Palace, be sure to note the ornate reception halls as well as the large Pendopos (open-air pavilion built on columns) that was erected specifically so that the sovereign could listen to private performances of gamelan (traditional ensemble) music. Located within the grounds of the Kraton, the Taman Sari, often referred to by its old Dutch name of Waterkasteel (Water Castle), was designed in the mid-18th century as a royal pleasure park for the first Sultanate of Yogyakarta and his entourage/harem. It is said that the sultan would sit in the tower overlooking the now restored central bathing complex watching the goings-on below while being entertained by his wives. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before later check-in to your accommodation in Yogyakarta for overnight. Meals B+L
